Alabama's correctional system manages the state's prison facilities and supervises offenders under community supervision. The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) oversees the operation of 30 correctional facilities across the state, including 15 major prisons and 15 work centers. These facilities are responsible for housing and supervising inmates who have been sentenced to a period of incarceration. In addition to these facilities, Alabama also has federal prisons and county prisons.

Inmate Search Tools

The ADOC's inmate search tool is available on their website and allows users to search for inmates in Alabama state prisons. To search for an inmate, users need to provide their first and last name, and either their AIS (Alabama Institutional Serial) number or their date of birth. The search results will include the inmate's name, AIS number, gender, race, birthdate, and the facility where they are currently housed.

To search for inmates in federal prisons, users can use the Federal Bureau of Prisons' inmate locator tool, available on their website. To search for inmates in county prisons, users will need to contact the individual county sheriff's office or check their website for information on inmate search procedures.

VINELink System

Alabama participates in the VINELink system, which is a national database of information on offenders who are currently in custody. VINELink allows users to search for inmates in various correctional facilities across the country, including state and federal prisons, as well as some county jails. To use VINELink to search for inmates in Alabama, users can visit the VINELink website and search by state and county.
